Journey to the magical Indonesian island of Bali where you’ll

Community Service

You’ll volunteer at two different projects. One is an organization that offers English and computer classes for underprivileged
Balinese youth, and we will get an opportunity to meet some of the students and learn about educational issues in Bali.We’ll also volunteer with Senang Hati, a BTS that serves the needs of physically disabled Balinese. Assisting the residents of Senang Hati will be volunteer experience you’ll never forget. Hands-on Learning We will learn about the intersection of traditional spirituality and ecological sustainability and how that is expressed through the arts. We’ll do hands-on workshops on Balinese Gamelan music, Kecek dance, and mask-making and meet with community leaders to learn about issues facing the community. You’ll learn first-hand about life as a small scale farmer by working in the rice fields and spend time with peasant farmers’ families. Bali is also uniquely suited to learn about leadership. Our leadership sessions are designed to enrich your capacity to create change in your own communities. We believe that the Balinese people embody leadership in their daily lives, and we will use this learning for our “living leadership

Adventure

The entire Bali journey will be an adventure. The Balinese culture is based on living harmoniously with the natural world, and you will get a “behind the scenes” tour while you trek through luscious rice paddies, visit remote temple sites, snorkel through the coral reef with dolphins, and raft down the beautiful Ayung River overlooking massive canyons. On weekends we will take time to explore this unique island and all of its breathtaking sites. We’ll end the 21-Day Flagship program with a farewell dinner at the palace of the Royal Family of Peliatan Village.

Lodging

We will be staying in Ubud, the cultural arts capital of Bali, and also the town featured in the book and movie Eat, Pray, Love. Ubud is renowned for the arts, especially mask makers, traditional healers,dance, music, and other craftsmen. This fascinating village has all the comforts of home, but has a distinct essence that draws people from all over the world to witness its serenity, beauty and power. The GLA Home Base in Bali is a traditional Balinese compound with a courtyard surrounded by individual rooms. Students will share a room with one or two other students. Food will consist of locally grown, organic cuisine such as fruits, vegetables, grains and meats.

Tuition

Tuition includes all in-country expenses including lodging, meals, transportation, all activities and entrance fees, community service materials, all excursions, backup medical insurance, and experienced program leaders.
Tuition does not include the following: international airfare, souvenirs, snacks, laundry, internet access, phone calls, or medical expenses.

There will be many opportunities to join in these amazing events and have “behind the scenes” experiences that few tourists get to enjoy. In addition, special evening performances will be included.

Day 1: Sunday – You will arrive at the airport in Denpasar where you will be met by our staff and taken to the BTS Home Base in Ubud, the cultural and arts center of Bali. After settling in, we will go enjoy an authentic Balinese dinner accompanied by a dance performance welcoming us to our new home.

Day 2: Monday – We will start this morning with an orientation to Bali and team-building exercises to get to know one another. A local village leader will come and talk about issues being faced by Bali and provide context to the volunteer work we will be doing. The afternoon and evening will consist of an opportunity to explore Ubud and free time to rest as you will still be recovering from jetlag.

Day 3: Tuesday – Get ready for the Amazing Race: Bali Uncovered! We will be breaking up into teams and learning more about the Balinese culture and traditions through a friendly competition that will test our wit, teamwork and creativity. This fun activity will be an all day outing, and we will come back for dinner to share our discoveries.

Day 4: Wednesday – After breakfast, we will head to a local banjar, or community center, to participate in many of the Balinese arts that have become to famous around the world. Local villagers will teach us Gamelan music, Legong dance, and woodcarving. In the afternoon, we will have our first leadership session, going over the skills and practices that will inform our learning throughout the trip. Our first reflection dialogue will conclude the evening.

Day 5: Thursday – In the morning we will start our first volunteer project with Campuan College. This organization offers English and computer classes for underprivileged Balinese youth, and we will get an opportunity to meet some of the students and learn about educational issues in Bali. The afternoon will have us on a trek through the beautiful rice terraces to witness the farmers tending to their rice. We will learn about how rice is grown and its importance to the Balinese lifestyle.

Day 6: Friday – Our volunteer work will continue, with a morning and early afternoon spent assisting the Balinese students from the previous day with their English lessons. We will also run a leadership activity to create lasting bonds with our new Balinese friends. In the late afternoon, we will visit a local temple and learn about the Balinese spiritual practices that are so important in their everyday lives.

Day 7: Saturday – This weekend we will head to Amed, which is located in the southeast corner of Bali. The trip will take us along winding roads and through traditional villages. As you arrive into this village, you’ll recognize long rows of traditional Balinese fishing boats ready for their morning outings. Our careful selection of your unique weekend lodge will allow you to meet local Balinese and engage in the traditional culture removed from the tourist attractions. Today will be spent enjoying the Balinese beaches and an afternoon hike in the valleys around the area. We will finish off the day with a beautiful dinner on the beach.

Day 8: Sunday – Wake up early to a traditional boating ride to look for dolphins in the beautiful waters of Bali. We will also go snorkeling and witness the extraordinary coral hiding below, a treasure to see first hand. After lunch at the family house of some local villagers, we will make our way back to Ubud. The evening will conclude with a reflection dialogue.

Day 9: Monday – Our first morning back in Ubud will have us teaching English again with students from Campuan College. In the afternoon we will continue our leadership sessions and discuss ways to practice our new skills in our volunteer projects.

Day 10: Tuesday – We will do a final morning of service with Campuan College, and saying goodbye to our new friends from this important NGO. A trip to a traditional healer will be an afternoon that you will never forget, as we get to experience the ancient customs of herbal medicines and health care. We will have a reflection dialogue at the end of the day.

Day 11: Wednesday – Most of the day will have us volunteering with Senang Hati, a BTS that serves the needs of physically disabled Balinese. We will learn about the challenges faced by these amazing people, and the ways in which they become productive members of society. Assisting with some of the daily activities of the residents of Senang Hati will be an enjoyable volunteer experience you will not forget.

Day 12: Thursday – We will continue with our community service in the morning with Senang Hati. In the afternoon, a visit to an organic farming center will have us learning about organic agriculture and new trends in Bali for sustainable environmental practices. We will have our reflection dialogue in the evening.

Day 13: Friday – This will be our final day with our friends at Senang Hati, filled with a celebratory lunch and performances. Later in the day, we will have another leadership session, concluding with a dinner farewell for students on the 14-day trip.

Day 14: Saturday (14-day program students) – For those on the 14-day trip, this morning we will be taking you to the airport for your departure. We will miss you!

21-Day Flagship Program Continues

Day 14: Saturday – Time to wake up early for a white-water rafting trip down the Ayung River. This will be an all-day excursion that will leave us exhausted, yet glowing from an adventure immersed in the natural beauty of Bali.

Day 15: Sunday – This morning will include a visit to a remote village to assist Campuan College with their weekly Sunday classes for Balinese children. We will participate with their program and run some lessons with Campuan staff. Following our morning volunteer activity, we will make our way to Jimbaran Bay, a historical fishing village, which is famous for its sunset dinners with all the fresh fish
you can eat!

Day 16: Monday – Our final week will be focused on a service project that will put our leadership skills to good use. We will be dividing up into teams and creating an innovative project that will produce lasting change in Bali. Each group will include Balinese youth that will collaborate on this project with you. Today we will introduce you to your teams and give you time to brainstorm the project that you
will work on for the remainder of the week. In the evening, we will have a dialogue reflection.

Day 17: Tuesday – During the day, we will have the groups go out into the community and connect with local BTSs that will serve as resources for the projects. Later in the evening, we will set up a lounge for BTS Movie Night!

Day 18: Wednesday – We will continue working on our projects and preparing for a final presentation of sharing and celebrating our experiences. Later in the afternoon, we will have free time to enjoy some of our remaining time in Ubud with sports, swimming and sun!

Day 19: Thursday – The morning hours will be used to finalize our presentations, which will start in the afternoon. We will invite our Balinese friends from our time in Bali to join in the conclusion of these projects. To celebrate our work and to enjoy one of our final nights in Bali, we will go to a live music venue for some dancing and good times!

Day 20: Friday – Our leadership sessions will conclude today with some ways of integrating your learning into your life back home, and pathways to action so that you continue to hone the leader in you going forward. We will also reflect on our experiences in Bali and share in the self-discoveries that made this trip special. Our last night will include a special farewell dinner at the Palace of the Royal Family of Peliatan (the village next to Ubud), an unforgettable experience! The night will end with a spectacular dance performance as a tribute to your time spent in Bali.

Day 21: Saturday – Students will eat breakfast and have a chance to do some last minute shopping in Ubud before heading to the airport for their journey home.

The tour is started from pick you up at the hotel lobby and drop to the Balinese traditional market to see the Balinese activities side in their traditional market. Afterward the trip is continued to see the Jagatnata Temple (the biggest temple in Denpasar town) and beside of the temple you may visit the Bali Museum (on opening time only) or you may visit the Bajra Sandhi Monument where this place to honor the Balinese Society Struggle. Your last destination is visiting the Treasure Island where you can see the Balinese Society activities like Balinese cooking, Balinese game, gamelan practicing, Batik Painting etc.

You will be picked up by our tour guide at the stop point of the rafting adventure company for Ubud Tour. The trip is continued to visit Tegalalang countryside to see the beautiful panorama of rice terrace. The rice terrace is uniquely designed with beautiful hollowing on the steep bank that makes the amazing panorama. It is situated on the hilly land with the river valley and the cool atmosphere surrounds it. This panorama is ideally seen from the apposite of this rice terrace right on the main road from Ubud to Kintamani. Tegalalang Rice Terrace is one of Ubud tourism icon located in north side of this village and it has been many visited by tourist every day.

This tour package is started from picking you up at the hotel by our tour guide and you will see the Balinese make the artwork like jewelry silver work, wood carving, painting etc and then the trip is continued to Ubud. In Ubud you will see the tourist destinations like Tegalalang Rice Terrace, Ubud Monkey Forest , Ubud art market, and museum. At the end of the tour you will enjoy the elephant ride at Elephant Camp before returning to the hotel.

CELUK AND MAS VILLAGE
Celuk is the name of countryside in Gianyar regency where most of the local societies are very creative to create the handicraft from silver. Multifarious of silver work style are presenting in this are which you may purchase and bring home for your souvenir. Mas is countryside close to Ubud where you can see the local people are doing on wood carving. There are plenty of wood carving are presented in this area as an alternative tourist destination in Bali.

TEGALALANG RICE TERRACE
You will see the beautiful rice terrace at Tegalalang countryside, northern part of Ubud Bali. The rice terrace is extremely amazing due to it is built on the cliff bank with the beautiful valley. The rice field located on hillside is compiled regularly and devious that presents very beautiful panorama. There are spot point where we have a look and having picture for your documentations. Tegalalang is one of tourist destinations in Bali which is visited many tourist every day and it place is surrounded by cool atmosphere that make it the right place to be visited on Ubud Tour.

UBUD MONKEY FOREST
Ubud Monkey Forest is a small forest located in the center of Ubud where several group of monkeys are life in their habitat. These monkey are relative tame with a strong supervision from the local community to supervise it animals during the opening hour to secure the visitor when entering this area. The group of monkeys with cute face will amuse you when visiting this place and you will see one Balinese Temple reside in this forest.

UBUD ART MARKET
This market is strategically located in the center of Ubud and apposite to Ubud Palace (Puri Saren). In this market you will find plenty of souvenirs with multifarious of style, colors and types. During visiting this market, you can connect your visit to Ubud Palace to see the life of Ubud empire with their unique and beautiful houses. Ubud Palace is also used as a center of art activities where the Balinese performances are presented everyday in evening time on the open stage.

PAINTING MUSEUM
In this museum, you will find a lot of painting collection from the world’s artist including the famous local artist. The paintbrush incision on canvas that owns high art values are very easy found in this museum. The painting museum is one of the alternative tourist destination in Bali offers a different experience to recognize the artwork in canvas.
